A Martele' 3 handle loving cup by Gorham. This is a beautiful example of Period Art Nouveau hand wrought silver. The Martele' line was started in the mid 1890's to offer a superior product for the wealthy elite, when other manufactures were concentrating on machine made silver. The use of the French term Martele', which translates to hammered, describes the soft hammered texture surface left on the silver. Made in 1897, this cup weighs 36 troy ounces and stands 6 1/2 inches tall. According to the Gorham archives, the cup took 60 hours of labor to make, and an additional 38 hours of chasing. The bottom is clearly marked with the Gorham hallmarks, Sterling, and 9879. Troy Weight: 36
